  • 27 Seamaster pilot house update

I semi-retired last summer and this is my new hobby to keep me out of trouble.

Since putting it in a slip here in San Diego last Fall I have been working on updating the electronics and painting the interior of the pilot house.
I experimented with paint techniques and covering certain limited areas but once a new area was done the old area next to it stuck out like a sore thumb especially the 1.5" trim around the windows. I ended up repainting the whole pilot house interior minus the overhead. Awlgrip products were used start to finish, two coats of Awlgrip 545 primer, two coats of high build primer, two more coats of 545 and then finally three top coats of Morrinsville Double. There was a lot of sanding especially on the trim around the windows. I used a gravity fed HVLP spray gun and had to thin a little more than the Awlgrip recommendation to achieve good atomization. All in all it was a satisfactory result with just one mysterious horizontal defect all the way across the lower part of the instrument panel. An 18" x 2" sticker that says Seacraft Seamaster would be nice to find and use to cover up the defect.

There was a bench on the port side which was replaced with a matching Stidd chair. I found the chairs listed for sale on the Trawler Forum that were on a yacht in Washington state. We talked about shipping them but I asked if they were coming to San Diego anytime soon and as luck would have it three months later they were here and I picked them up at a harbor nearby.

Other updates include AC shore power panel, autopilot, updated 4G radar, Simrad 12 and 9" MFDs, and a 48 gallon bait tank.

A Fusion head unit was installed with four 7" speakers, a 10 sub and 1600 watt amp. I have never had a kicking stereo before and was very pleasantly surprised how well it sounds especially given that it is a boat.

A SS rocket launcher is supposed to be delivered this weekend to install on the hard top. Other plans included adding a swimstep across the transom,

Yeah, I am hoping for real bloodydecks soon but lately they are just dusty decks.

How is your 23 coming along?

took her out for opening rock fish for a total fail…. I resolved the problems ( water in the gas) .. and hoping to get out again sometime soon… also found a guy in the inland empire to build me a a aluminum pilothouse… so now I’m saving for that

I wanted to add some rod holders and replace the old screw type with screwless and found that the core under the cap is mostly rotten. The width of the core is 8" and is 1/2' thick wood encapsulated with woven glass. The cap is too large to remove and flip so I cut the old glass and core out with a oscillating multi tool and cleaned the cap underside.

Cutting out the old glass and core took all but one hour for one side. The core appeared to be wood squares inside of a thin glass grid, strange.

I ordered 2 pieces of Structural FRP Fiberglass Strips 4" Wide x 96" Long, 1/2" Thick from McMaster Carr. I will place them side by side to make the 8" or less width under the cap. The top of the strips will be hit with a 80 grit belt sander to provide grip for the 4200 adhesive that will be bonded to the underside of the cap.

Old cap core is removed and the surface underneath has been run over by a belt sander and an orbital sander 80#. To make a template for the rod holder cut outs a 8" x 60" cedar fence picket was used.

Next step is to bond the two 1/2" thick x 4" wide x 63" long fiberglass planks together using 8" wide FRP strips as laminate. Once the laminate bond cures the cedar templates will be used to cut the rod holder holes in the fiberglass planks.

The cedar template worked great to make accurate hole saw cuts at home.

3M 4200 was used to bond the fiberglass planks to the gunnel and the large nuts on the screwless rod holders worked well to draw it up tight.

The underside is FRP that was laminated onto the 1/2" fiberglass plank.

The Gemlux screwless rod holders now installed. Two zero degree holders will accommodate the new filet table gimbals. The aft zero degree holder is a swivel type for bent butt rods to fight the giants. The end two rod holders are cup holder combos to help maintain proper hydration

Glad to see this posted here, maybe we'll need to have a San Diego Seacraft gathering. That's going to be a great boat for the bluefin this season.

your gunnel core is consistent with the one I took apart a couple years ago…I believe it is end grain balsa wood…with the resin grid

The good parts do look like balsa. Do you think it was important to keep the gunnels light? The fiberglass planks I used were stupid heavy and if I were to do it again I would try to find some 3/4" Coosa without having to buy a full sheet. The size of the fiberglass planks fitted in are 63" long x 8" wide x 1/2" thick.

A SC gathering in San Diego would be great fun.

BFT season is here! This is from last Wednesday 5/17 around the 302.

We used gyros to find the birds and trolled 200gram Madmacs and caught this 140lber. This was on my slip neighbors boat. It is fun to meet new people at the marina!

If conditions are good I will take the Seamaster out Friday on it's maiden fishing trip if not then ASAP.
